Hiking in SLO

There is always plenty to do in San Luis Obispo. From fantastic local dining to an array of upscale shopping plazas and strips to Farmers Market and everything in between, it’s the perfect area for a day of leisurely fun. However, when you need to get your blood pumping and your muscles toned, SLO also offers numerous hiking trails and more rigorous mountainous paths. Below are just a few of the dozens of trails to explore throughout the city.
- Bishop Peak – This 4.5 mile hike along a dormant volcano will not only take you up to as high as 1,559 feet to see the glorious 360° view of the homes and city below, but it also has an optional rock climbing section about half way up, where the more adventurous hikers can test their skills against the smooth side of the mountain.
- Laguna Lake Trail – A bit more mild than Bishop’s, this 1.5 mile trail loops around Laguna lake and has a fabulous view of five of the ‘Seven Sister’ dormant volcanoes – Cerro San Luis Obispo, Bishop Peak, Chumash Peak, Cerro Romualdo and Hollister Peak.
- Poly Canyon – Following the back end of Cal Poly campus, this lengthier 5.5 mile trail overlooks the canyon and runs alongside Brizziolari Creek. The open, pastoral path winds though the luscious oak groves and the return trip will take you across the railroad tracks that lie beneath Cuesta Ridge.
Many trails offer much more than beautiful scenery alone. Some trails will take hikers through a cultural trip of some of the most unique aspects of San Luis Obispo, including our mission and some of Cal Poly’s most monumental architectural creations.
