About half a mile off the US 101 Freeway near Shell Beach lies a quaint piece of farmland that has been converted for the public to a family-oriented place of fun.

The Avila Valley Barn doesn’t look like it has too much going on from the outside, other than the multitude of cars coming and going. Once you take a walk around, however, you’ll see what the commotion is all about.

28 varieties of fruits and vegetables are grown right on the farm and sold at an exceptionally low price in their on-location shop. Many of these fruits can be picked individually and accessed via hay ride to the fields, where visitors are given a basket to fill as they please. The other goodies that are sold are obtained from neighboring farms, making Avila Barn a fully local distributor.

Next to the grocery shop is a converted barn labeled “Sweets Shoppe”. If the decadent smell wafting throughout the place doesn’t convince you, the variety of exciting and unique candies, fudges, and ice creams will surely be enough to entice your taste buds.

During the holidays, Avila Barn sells pumpkins in October and November that can be accessed on their main ground or obtained by tractor hay ride to their farm and picked individually. It also has two intricate hay mazes, one for the younger children and a more difficult one for the older kids.

Christmas trees, both Douglass and Noble Furs, are also sold during November and December.

The perimeter of the barn features a miniature petting zoo where cows, sheep, goats, ostriches, emus, and chickens are enjoyed and pampered by the young and the old.

Delicious freshly plucked and roasted corn on the cob is sold on Saturdays and Sundays from a stand on the farm, with a variety of additional seasoning choices and butters that can be added at no extra cost.

Welcoming and friendly staff are also keepers of the farm, and service customers as though they were family.

Avila Barn has a warm and relaxing atmosphere as well a unique and inviting set of attributes that set this as of the most well-received places on the central coast.
